Long term...mmm...hard one, just continue running and having the luck a running races to keep on the edge, every so often.

Sounds like a pretty tough race. You ran a negative split though, which shows that you won the mental battle of wanting to throw in the towel. You have been running a lot of mileage and recently too. I have confidence that the benefits of your hard work and training will kick in and produce the results you are looking for so keep rocking steady!

April, yes, it was hard race. Tried no to look at my watch very much; but knew that the target was not going to be met. Maybe that is why my nephew beat me ... mmm... probably. =). Will work harder now, put in some speed sessions, get some real tempos, etc.

Lucia, yes, I have to learn to get in line earlier. I realize this as soon as I get into the corral and see tons of people in front...maybe someday it will go through my thick head. =)

Congratulations on a PR.

Based on your splits, I believe you did have around 1:40 in you, but the road block at the start messed you up. I would try another half in a month or two and this time line up further ahead to avoid the roadblock. Try 4:40/K pace from the start.

How many half marathons have you run in total?

As for the start I think you should be more ambitious and start a lot nearer the front of the field in future, so you get a better start. In an ideal world everyone would position themselves according to time and the start would be fine, but that seldom happens. Next time get there early and start nearer the front.

Keep doing what you have been doing but one session which will help you improve your half time is to do a 20 minute tempo run once per week, warm up, run 20 minutes at about half marathon pace, and cool down, the 20 minutes comes from Jack Daniels, but you can build it up to 30 mins potentially, as you get stronger. As it is essentially half marathon pace practice too, it should help you maintain half marathon pace too

Sasha, yes. I agree on getting closer to that start line. That should save a minute or two of the time...the hill really drained my energy. Specially the last long hill in km 17, that one left me spent. But I shall keep trying. That sub 1:40 WILL come! Thanks.

Eric - I have no shame to go up to the front anymore. Unless it's a big time race with big competition, just go up and toe the line. Lots of times people are too shy, so I say, "Somebody's got to do it." Think of it this way. You had 3500 people in the race. You lost a couple of minutes due to bobbing and weaving. That would have probably put you closer to 700th place. Now, if the starting line is big enough, say that 50 people can stand shoulder to shoulder, you would be 14 rows back. That's probably only about 20 feet back from the starting line. Go for it! If it's an even smaller local 5k or something, just step right on the line.

Nice job on the race and the report. I serioulsy could feel the hills with you! I have to say that the same thing happens to me on the flat parts of race, either have me run up or down, but not flat!!!

Sorry you are not thrilled with your time, but you finished and your mind wanted to throw in the towel, so you won that battle! Oh, and you won the battle with the cop.

In a big race you have to do some get-on-the-Russian-Mexican-bus type of maneuver before the start, or else you are left off the bus.
