Long term...mmm...hard one, just continue running and having the luck a running races to keep on the edge, every so often.

That whole bathroom things is not new to us runners, and only on this blog could you discuss it so freely and have everyone feel your pain!!! I hate it when bathrooms are locked. Did they not have porta potties along the way???

Great job on that first marathon. I think the first one is purely about learning to do it, the next one will be better. I quit running after my first marathon, so do not do that!!!

Immodium is a runners best friend, BTW. It does not always solve the problem for me, but it helps and I am making it farther each time without having any emergencies. I know many who take it before races.

HAPPY HEALING and take care of the aching body. Let us know when you can successfully go down the stairs or squat on the pot without dying!

Well done for finishing Eric! Sorry to hear about the problems, but at least you might be able to do something differently to help avoid them in your next marathon and use the experiences you gained in the marathon.

The vaseline is a good idea, I used to put it over my feet before every run, but eventually the feet get tough enough that it is not necessary.

I think you should be proud of the progress you have made since you started running!

Congrats on the finish; covering the distance is half the battle. Now you know what it feels like and can find that oh-so-elusive strategy that will work for you to get a blazing fast time.

I feel your pain with the bathroom stops (fortunately for me, most ultras are on trails with plenty of leaves...)

Great job on the FIRST one. I don't care how much you train and get ready, on race day the body is going to do what it wants that day. It took me 6 marathons to get the planets to all line up for me and have a great marathon. I had good marathons but always not what I had hoped for. My last one I didn't even decide to run until the day before.....forgot my garmin so I didn't know how fast I was going....and had the race of my life!

Keep up the training, it will all come together and will be a great adventure.

Congratulations on surviving your first marathon! You did a nice job, considering all. There is nothing worse than thinking you have a toilet and then have it taken away from you. I take immodium, and still tend to go 2-3 times each marathon. Not sure what the issue is, but I always have TP on hand in case I need it. I never stay with friends in a race, but that's just because I view races as races. If you have a time goal, then you have to stick to the goal instead of the friend, imo. Hope your legs are feeling better. I've run 4 marathons, and by far my sorest experience was my first.

Michelle, luckily I always carry TP, otherwise, well, lets leave it there. It was a great experience, and I'm already making plans for next year, hoping for a great PR. Lots of training to do. And, only four marathons? I would have thought you had run many more...

Felicitaciones! "Donde esta el bano" maraton :-) Para mi, cada segundo es como eso, pero aprendi un truco que es muy util en maratones afuera de la ciudad.

Creo que necisitas mas tiempo para acostumbrar tu cuerpo al maraton, mucho mas que a distancias mas cortas. Tienes que continuar tu entrenamiento aerobico. Despues de dos anos vas a correr un maraton mas mejor, mas acerca a tu potencial de velocidad.

Sasha, gracias. No dudes en pasarme el secreto de tu truco, dado que creo que siempre tendre ese problema.

Estoy totalmente de acuerdo en que falta el entrenamiento aerobico, y ese va a ser mi objetivo para este 2010: correr como loco todo el anio.

Revise todo mi log de entrenamiento y, tristemente, no corri 137 dias de los 365 de este 2009. Una meta para el 2010 es un limite de 75 dias de no correr (es un dia de descanso por semana mas 13 dias adicionales como 'colchon'). Necesito recuperar la consistencia.
