From seeaprilrun on Wed, Jan 06, 2010 at 20:26:25 from 205.172.12.229

Wow you are really running at a generally faster clip. Must be because you are getting so fit.

From Eric Day on Wed, Jan 06, 2010 at 20:36:06 from 189.192.35.161

Naw, not today. But maybe tomorrow... ;)

April, the clip is not easy...although at the end I just want to finish, I do feel very satisfied with distance & time...will continue, see if this helps on race results with time. And getting more fit? mmm...feel slower and no push to go the full 10 miles a day...

Someone start translating stuff! I want to get the jokes.

From Burt on Sun, Jan 17, 2010 at 15:19:12 from 98.177.216.165

Okay Mike, I’ll explain. Lyman, don’t listen. As you probably know, ‘cuantos años tienes’ means ‘how old are you’ in Spanish. The literal translation is ‘how many years do you have.’ I like to make the excuse that I can’t make the little squiggly tilde over the n (even though I really can.) So if I ask someone ‘cuantos anos tienes?’, it becomes a whole new meaning. Ano is Spanish means, well that is it’s literal translation is, ummm it takes the meaning, oh I can’t say it. Suffice it to say, that if you ask someone how many anos they have, it’s very very funny. And if you tell someone to have a happy new ano, that’s almost as funny.

Nicely done! Bummer that the race was cut short so you could not use it as a comparison or PR or whatever...but great job on pushing through even when you were breathing hard. I must be doing it wrong, I am always breathing hard. People can hear me coming for miles.

From Eric Day on Tue, Feb 02, 2010 at 12:48:35 from 200.77.36.244

Sorry for taking so long to answer your nice comments.

Bonnie, thank you.

Chris, not to shabby, uh?

Snoqualmie, thanks, not really. It is put together by a running group called 'raramuri' but have nothing to do with the northern raramuri indians.

April, it felt like it, but I just get tired from hearing my breath.

Paul, thanks, but my mind keep playing tricks on me...

John, thanks too. It was hard, maybe I should just focus on long distance running...

Burt, hey, I was one of those 'recreational runners' ... just kidding...it was fun.

Burning lungs? Doesn't sound like you should be running.

I've heard the rule of thumb for running while sick was the neck rule.

If it's above your neck, then it's okay.

If it's below your neck, then rest. Lungs are definitely below your neck, unless you're running on your hands.

From Teena Marie on Sat, Feb 13, 2010 at 17:36:13 from 174.52.45.85

From Eric Day on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 13:34:00 from 189.192.55.85

Hi guys, still kicking. Not well but still alive. Weather has been lousy here, cold-hot-cold-warm-very cold-etc. Not good for colds or coughs. Have not recovered and can feel it while running. My chest feels tired and tight.

Went running yesterday and all I could manage were 7k, felt like I had run a hard 20k. Today I feel better but did not go running.

I had registered to a HM tomorrow, I will run it, but no hard pace. So, no PR, but take it easy as a very easy long run...

So, thanks for asking.... take care all.

yikes, sounds horrible Eric. Please take care of yourself. Sometimes taking some time off running (rather than running while sick) actually reduces the overall amount of time you have to "not run". Especially when the cold/virus/etc. is in your lungs. You are still a runner even when you aren't running!

From ChrisM on Mon, Feb 22, 2010 at 14:34:36 from 86.151.220.223

Eric, I'm fairly new to this blog, but want to wish you the best of luck. I hope that the treatment you have had so far has been helpful, and that you are starting to feel better.

I also hope your kidneys recover enough that eventually your doctors allow you to run at least a little bit - perhaps 15 miles or so per week. So few miles probably would not fully satisfy your desire to run and train to be the "fastest you can be", but you might still enjoy it, and you would also receive many of the health benefits associated with running.

I am acquainted with a nephrologist (kidney doctor); the next time I see him I will ask his opinion about running with your condition. (It would be helpful to know what variant of FSGS you have - do you know if it is the "Tip Variant" type?)

I did find a running times article (http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=4193) that indicates you need to be very careful about using ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medications, because they can harm the kidneys. Also strenuous exercise can cause damage to muscles, which in turn releases myoglobin. Excessive amounts of myoglobin can harm the kidneys, especially if you are dehydrated and have been using ibuprofen.

I'm not saying this to alarm you, but mostly to educate you in case your doctors eventually give you a green light to resume light running. And I very much hope they give you that green light. Best of luck to you, Eric. Take care, - Adele

From Eric Day on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 10:18:46 from 200.77.35.169

The reason I have not posted a pic of the house is that I keep forgetting the darn camera. But soon, I promise.

Again, thanks all for the support.

I've been several days of the medicine, so far so good. Don't feel bad.

Adele, I'm very interested on your neph doctor acquaintance comments. Not sure what type of FSGS I have, will have to ask the doctor. All I can say, its in a very early stage. My kidney is still about 95%, so damage is low. And yes, doctor ordered me not to do any mass muscle building exercise.

Any literature you find or have would be great.

Many thanks !

Eric!

As you know I've been estranged from the blog, but our friend Montelepsy alerted me of this posting... You have an amazing attitude towards this issue, which says so much about what a great person you really are - I know I would be crying and complaining to heaven and hell...

I have enjoyed our healthy competition and it is my goal to beat your 10k time to be the ultimate winner of... the Eric Day Cup, since I already have you beat on the half and full marathon :) When I am ready to take on the challenge, I will wear the legendary Mexico headband once again!

With all my heart I wish you the best of luck with your health and with your life in general - the running community is going to miss your sense of humor and great attitude, while at the same time I am sure you will enjoy your bit of extra time with your family and spend some time in your new home.

Keep checking this blog every once in a while; my last semester in school ends this August so I'll be a big shot runner after that!

A big hug from Washington DC!

Your friend and fan,

Lucia

Gee Lucia, I thought we had lost you ... glad to hear from you. Thank you, thank you, very much, for your lovely words of support. It has not been easy dealing with it, reading about it & that I have to take a lot of medicines (I don't like taking medicines).

So far so good, but can't call victory yet.

I do hope that, maybe, just maybe, if I go into remission, I can go back to running. Maybe you will hold the Eric Day Cup forever, but running is running and nobody can beat that! =)

BTW, house is almost finished, will probably moving in by the end of the month (finally!!!).

Glad to hear from you, keep in touch and " I WILL BE BACK" !

Hugs back from mexico, thanks for being my friend.

From Eric Day on Sat, Jul 24, 2010 at 13:42:50 from 200.77.42.198

House is ALMOST finished (I have said this for the last 6 months...). Bedrooms are 98% done, still have several doors & odd stuff to install. All woodwork, slow part here. But we plan to move in in about 15-20 days.

Will post picture soon.

PS. Thanks for the cheers.

Teena,

For about 6 months now. From all the bad, I'm in very good position & shape, since most people find out of this when its in terminal stage. I'm at the beginning. So, that should be good, no?

I'll keep updating as I get more info.

Well done Eric's wife! Now everyone in your house is running?

Could be the fact that you are not running as much as you used to, possibly making the calf muscle tighter? Is it tight or just sore?

From Eric Day on Mon, Oct 25, 2010 at 17:35:38 from 189.192.20.41

Well, my wife is trying, which makes me very happy. My girls, mmm, is it just a fad or permanent thing? Time will tell.

It's not tightness, its more like a 'pull' but weird. On wednesday, I was running feeling just great and then I started feeling a bit of pain, I continued running, but the pain kept increasing until I stopped. It was not very painful, but knew something was not right. Walking was fine, but no running. So the cause, your guess is as good as mine.

Cold?? How cold? Does it get cold there?

From Eric Day on Mon, Dec 06, 2010 at 13:09:06 from 200.92.105.167

Hi Kelli.

We are crybabies down here, can't tolerate cold. It was about 3 celsius, that about 37 fahrenheit ...

Cheers !

Someday I am going to come there in winter and run in shorts when it is 37 degrees...just to shock the locals! Glad you feel good!

From Eric Day on Mon, Dec 06, 2010 at 18:55:09 from 189.196.42.86

People would stare, you can count on it.

I run in short, my legs tolerate the cold better than the rest of my body. But I wear a long sleeve shirt and another short sleeve over that, or a vest. Sometimes, gloves, and if its colder, I'll wear a running 'skullcap' (is that correct?). Don't care to run with long pants or jackets...

Hey, we were about the same temperature in Utah today!!! How odd is that?

From ChrisM on Tue, Dec 07, 2010 at 16:17:27 from 86.150.1.215

3 whole C?

It has been like minus a million C here in England, brrrrrr!

From Burt on Tue, Dec 07, 2010 at 21:01:02 from 206.19.214.144

Chris, I'm not sure, but that's sounds like it's below absolute zero. Is that even possible?

From ChrisM on Wed, Dec 08, 2010 at 02:59:28 from 86.150.1.215

In England, anything is possible. Even the impossible.

OH, way over the 5k limit! This is good!

I really liked MegaMind, very funny show.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

From Eric Day on Mon, Dec 27, 2010 at 11:55:12 from 200.77.17.116

Thanks Burt !

Kelli, I've decided to drop the limit and just take it nice and easy. My megamind is not as great as the movie.

Merry Christmas !

Nice and easy is perfect and enjoyable, I think we could all benefit from that. I need to try harder myself. The 10 mile a day limit sent me over the edge for a bit!

Group runs are fun. I ran with Marathon Dreamer last night and the time passed by so quick.

LAZY? I think not.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Oh, and running with people is what it is all about. I hate running alone!!
